Maybe a first class degree could be similar to honors? I don't know how other Uni's work, but here in Australia we get our Bachelor degree, and if we get the marks (A's) we can do another year and get a Bachelors degree with honors. As for me personally, I'm going to be glad to just graduate with my plain old Law degree. No honors.

A first class degree is the highest possible, I think. I dunno, I'll ask my cousin. She goes to Harvard.

I actually graduated from the university of Melbourne with a first class honours and I wonder whether it's any different from how CC got his first class It really depends on the university, because where I'm doing my masters, the undergraduate assessment scheme is totally different from what I went through.

A 1st class degree is the highest possible, and one from Clare College, Cambridge is the highest accolade someone could have - I SHOULD KNOW, I'VE GOT ONE.

So it basically translates into the stateside version of "suma cum laude"? Impressive.
What's your degree in?

So that would be like having 'A' levels...? I am not too familiar with the British school system, but I am an Adrianne Mole Diaries reader, and there are stuff like 'A' and 'O' levels, and someone having a Phd at the age of 23... is that possible? Wow, a first class degree in Natural Sciences... I went through Elementary Physics and the Mechanics sucked. I quite enjoyed the atomic discussions though

That impresses the @$%& out of me. Chemistry and I have never gotten along (funny, seeing as my mother was once a chemistry prof), and you got your chem degree from a place that's been around since "the [first] syllable of recorded time." Color me speechless... and envious.
But I like where I am right now... it pushes the envelope in terms of race theory, popular culture, and the social ramifications of both. But gosh... impressive.

I suck at chemistry. Right now we're doing this "polyatomic ions" balancing thingy, which everyone seems to get except me. *sigh*

Now that feels good ... I got some company here ... I got my first class in Chemistry as well ... Actually, Chemistry is the best thing in the world once you get the hang of it!

It's too much like math for me. I'm more interested in English and languages.

O-chem was fun, but I still did badly... guess my mom's genes didn't get passed down to me... I got my dad's penchant for the spoken word-- and the passion from his revolutionary past. (Perhaps its one of the reasons I got my transfer to UC Berkeley before a horrible grade in Advanced Music Theory/ Harmony made them change their mind.) I really should stick to English Lit.
Aside: Does anyone know of any places with a good American Studies/ Ethnic Studies program?
Oh, and does Cambridge really have a discipline titled "ORIENTAL studies"? If so, I'm just offended.
