Okay, I'm just posting this to put the rumor to rest because this isn't the only place that I've seen Christian Coulson's name in connection with the character of Chris in "Miss Saigon." I've seen his name on some "Miss Saigon" boards as well. Here's what is true: There is currently a UK version of the "Miss Saigon" tour going on-- I believe that it's playing in Bristol and I think that's going until June. There is currently a U.S. tour of "Miss Saigon." For more info, you can go to www.miss-saigon.com or www.misssaigonontour.comChristian Coulson is NOT currently contracted to the role of Chris (or any other "Miss Saigon" role) at this time. In the U.S., Allen Gillespie will be portraying Chris-- Michael Buchanan is his understudy. (Personally, when I see it on April 5th of this year, I hope it's the understudy because he's cuter.) In the UK, David Shannon is playing Chris. So, in what world does the name David Shannon translate into the name Christian Coulson? He doesn't even look like CC! He looks like this: So, there it is. I'm sure that if Mr. Coulson ever does sign a contract to play Chris, it'll be officially announced on either of the websites previously listed. So, just to reiterate-- Christian Coulson is NOT going to be in "Miss Saigon" any time soon.

Christian Coulson can sing. He wouldn't have been cast in the Cambridge ADC production of "Cabaret" otherwise.
I'll admit that I'd want to see Christian Coulson as Chris... just because I think he'd add something to the role to make the character more sympathetic to me. Right now, I think that the character of Chris is an imperialistic-crap-head-American-soldier with a misplaced hero-complex who was only attracted to Kim because it made him feel better about himself. Look at that line: "So I wanted to save her, protect her. Christ, I am American! How could I fail to do good?"
However, if Christian Coulson was in the role, he has this quality, depth, and a bit of darkness that suggests a kind of a conscience. He wouldn't come across as some brainwashed imperialistic soldier... I would be more inclined to believe that the character was in love. I wonder if Christian has the vocal range for the part...
But that doesn't really matter right now considering he isn't playing Chris any time soon. (Perhaps we can hope for the movie version?)

I was one of the people that heard that Christian Coulson was to play Chris, but I read it in an article about the Filipino "talent-factory". It said that the production was going to continue in Bristol and that Christian was going to star. It was on aonline.com.
Bummed that it isn't true, though.

Filipino talent factory... here's a thought, why don't I audition for Miss Saigon? Heck, I can act (feigning sickness), and I can sing (in my head), and I can dance (I love Dance Revolution in the arcades). Unfortunately, I don't look TOO Oriental, but make-up can do wonders. I just can't imagine strutting onstage in bikinis, SO... BETH? Are you still around? You actually READ Christian being in Miss Saigon, in an article about "the Filipino talent factory"? What does it say? And how could Christian be involved in that kind of article that relates to Filipino talents? Hey, have I told you guys that in CoS, in the sepia part, in most angles, Christian looks like a Filipino? Yes, most of my friends think so, and I do too. Make him more tan and he looks Pinoy. By the way, isn't aonline.com a sort of 'dating' page for Asians?

I actually don't think that Beth is full of it about the aonline.com thing. That USED to be the official site of the now defunct "A magazine." "A" was an Asian-American magazine that was marketed like an Asian-style "Cosmopolitan" meets "Vanity Fair." And, though it flirted with radical Asian-Am politics, it was more shallowly based. It was pulled off the presses not TOO very long ago... I think last December was their farewell issue-- which is when I started hearing the CC in "Miss Saigon" rumors.
AND I'm not particularly surprised that they would print an error like that. Since they changed editors in 2001, the publication has been a bit more lax in fact verification... and their articles began to really stink. (And they stopped taking articles from Oliver Wang-- BIG MISTAKE.)
It's only recently that aonline.com has become a personals website.
There's a writer at "Mimosa" that archived all the "political" articles at "A" in order to give them a "real" Asian-Am relevancy rating... (he really had it out for "A") I suppose I should ask him if he's got the article that Beth was talking about.
But back to the musical... As much as I HATE the stereotype that Kim represents in the musical, I like the music that's written for her part. I would LOVE to sing her part on stage... even more so if CC (or Damian Lewis or Niklaus Anderson) were to occupy the part of Chris. Does that make me a hypocrite?

Yes. I read it in December. Why did A magazine go belly-up, though?
