In Forester's Horatio Hornblower and the Hotspur, there is no character by the name of Midshipman Hammond. (I've read the series out of order to follow the A&E series, but I haven't had time to read Hotspur.) Characters from the book are expanded in the miniseries; ie. Archie Kennedy and Lt. Bush. In short, not much is known about Christian's character.

Let us all hope that Midshipman Hammond rides a cannon, runs in his heeled-boots and survives the two-hour long saga. Oh wait, can't forget the suggestive homoerotic moments.
