It had to come up somewhere... and after reading the movie post,it inspired me for yet another topic which i bet will trigger off a lot of discussion..lol
Fears and phobias
so what are your fears? do you have any unusual ones? or anything.talk about them here have any of you actually overcome a fear at all?
i'm clostrophobic, and i hate it.i dont think i'll ever overcome that.thats why i cant stand lifts at all..they just freak me out. there's small things which i also havea fear of... like spiders, and wasps, but im not sure why really, they're a lot smaller than i am,but still im afraid of them.
*shudders*

well I can't go into an elevator in a house. Its not Klaustrophobia I feel. As a very young child I was trapped in one, totally alone, full of fear and until this time I can't use any.

I think I have quite an unusual fear. I'm scared of tornadoes. The fact is that there aren't many in my country and when there are, they are rather small. But everytime there is a thunderstorm or when there's a lot of wind at night, I freak out. I know this must sound odd. On the other hand these things fascinate me. I think I've seen too many movies.

This is such a lame answer, but my nightmare has always been going onstage and having no idea what to do. Like, I'll have the lead in a musical and everyone is expecting me to do well, and I've completely forgotten all my lines. Not a very realistic fear, granted ~ I highly doubt I'd forget every single one of my lines...I suppose the real phobia behind this is a fear of being unprepared. Same with schoolwork. I'll stay up the night before a term paper is due, stressing.

my main fear is pain....everything i'm scared of comes down to the fact that if that thing happens to me it will cause me pain [such as thunderstorms, snakes...]

I'm scared of spiders, esspecially huntsmen. For those of you who don't know huntsmen are huge spiders we get in Australia. Imagine the palm of your hand as a spider- well a huntsmen wouldn't be ANY smaller than that!! They are not posienous, but because they're so big they give me the creeps. As a consequence movies like "Arachnaphobia" give me the shivers.
I used to refuse to get in lifts, until one day I was sick of climbing eighteen floors every time we went to visit my Grandmother and now I get in them, although sometimes I don't like it completely.
A friend of mine when I was younger was scared of thunderstorms, but this is only because her Dad was killed by lightning. I can't remember the exact details but he died when she was about three. So after hearing this the entire fourth grade went through a period of being scared of thunderstorms...

wow, someone got trapped in an elevator, a friend's father got killed by lightning... wow. Re death of a friend's father, actually I kinda developed this, uh, 'consciousness' before I take a bath. My friend's dad died before taking a bath, a vein somewhere in his head area bursted. So sometimes... actually, every time I am to take a bath, I think of the first splash of water exciting my nerves too much that it'll probably burst, and then I'd end up sprawled on the bathroom floor, lifeless... I am not scared of baths, it's just that THAT always keeps flashing in my mind. I don't really have phobias, just certain fears... like a mad stray dog at night, the idea of snakes while I go mountain climbing. OH, I know this very big DISTURBANCE. War movies. I hate movies on 20th century wars. I hate the sound of guns, of bombs, of explosives... I'd be totally deranged if I were in a war. I also have this fear of public speaking... sometimes

i have really weird phobias. i'm affraid of light bulbs! you may think im making this up or something, but its true.
last year i got in from babysitting at about 1AM and everyone was wasleep. i turned on my lamp and was sat by it on my bed when it exploded and glass shattered everywhere in my room leaving me in darkness but also an extra hotness from the heat of the lamp swept over me. it was horrible i just sat there petrified on my bed screaming my head of and i couldn't move for ages after!
sounds funny but i can tell you it wasn't! i'm also afraid of being alone. whenever i'm on my own in the house when its dark i freak myself out and get so scared. this is probably due to being bullied all my school life and when i was younger and my brothers used to leave me in the cupboard under the stairs in the dark.
i know im strange. so how is everyone? i've missed loads!

I am not a big fan of public speaking either but I am getting better: after all what kind of lawyer am I going to make if I don't want to speak up in court? Can you imagine me just shyly putting up my hand and whispering "Objection your honor"?

Mandragora - i know what u mean about war.I dont like stuff like that. near where i live there's a railway line, and they use the war siren sound to warn a train when another train is coming its way,and it bugs the hell out of me. i just dont like that sound for some reason I used to dread public speaking, when i was younger, through my first years of high school..i used to be really shy and thats why i didnt like it,the thought of everyone looking at me and listening to what i was saying,it was awful! and then when i was up there i could just feel myself blushing! and that makes it worse.i was terrible. Luckily in the past few years i've managed to get over that one,i dont know why,but it doesnt bother me as much. But sometimes i end up blushing when i think im gonna make a mistake, grrr lol. Oh my god MrsRiddle...that light bulb thing musta been scarey! jesus i wouldn't have known what to do! i dont like being alone in the house either,my imagination sorta gets carried away, and what would usually be the wind blowing a door causing it to creak, becomes a ghost! LOL.

I think my biggest fear is not being liked. I am always paranoid people are talking about me behind my back. That is why I hate being left out of things. I just want everyone to like me.

i sometimes get a bit freaked out when i'm alone and its dark.....not when i'm in my flat at uni coz theres always other people around but when i'm at my parents house, i have a kinda over-active imagination and like other people have said on here i tend to imagine things being differrent to what they actually are mrsriddle i'm not suprised ur scared of lightbulbs, i think i would be too if that happened to me!

Usually our dogs sleep in the laundry in their beds, but when I'm home alone at night I let them sleep out of it to protect me. My dog lies halfway between the front door and the back doors so she can see/hear everything. And once she starts barking she doesn't shut up, so I'm not scared of being home alone.

I have this book on the 'science of shopping', and interestingly, there is this chapter that talks about 'sensual shoppers', meaning shoppers like to touch the goods, so anyway, according to this study, shoppers NEVER TOUCH LIGHTBULBS ... though they're aching to be touched. It must be a result of all those cartoons!
I LOVE being home alone, so I can dance like mad in the livingroom!
I think the scariest experience I ever had was when I was sleeping in my bed, I have my bed against the wall --- I was sleeping on the far-edge of the bed on my side, then all of a sudden, this decorative frame from Egypt hanging on my wall just fell on my bed, nearly hitting me --- and there wasn't even an earthquake! I had no idea how that happened, but I started thinking it could MEAN SOMETHING since that maybe a week after that, my thick PHYSICS book fell from my bookshelf above my bed, and nearly hit my head.
Well, it's not exactly scary, but I was just starting to wonder... I have more allergies to stuff than phobias/fears, to be perfectly honest ;D
