Being a wizad is an inborn thing, so mainly genetics, if not, the kid is simply magical, like muggle-born wizards. There are wizards who have no magic at all--- remember Filch with his Kwikspell book? That's SO funny! They should bring it up in the third movie. As for Neville, I guess it was in this thread that mentioned that maybe Neville's simply going through some emotional trauma re his parents. Neville must be a good wizard, if we're talking about genes--- his parents are Aurors. (or Obliviators?)
I'm kinda starting to think that Neville's gonna play a big role of sorts in the future. Hmmm. That's the catch with the 'weaklings', that they at least get to get up and be strong and win in the end. That's quite possible. After all, HP is supposed to be for juvenile audiences so it is not too far the possibility of injecting some Dr Seuss/Dahl , er, Grimm Brothers/Christiansen type of 'moral of the story is...'
If I remember correctly from Book 1, Mrs Figgs is supposed to be old... there was this part Dudley ran over her with his bike while she's still in crutches! But then, maybe she just posing to be old...
Gee, I hope I have this kind of memory when it comes to my formulas and equations! Grrr.... they should make mathematics and physics as INTERESTING as HP!

i always thought of mrs figg as being in her late 50's/early 60's!
yeah that is generally the catch with weaker characters, neville will probablly save some1s life in a future book or something!

about professors... there will be 3 new professors. one for DADA, another for potions, and third for care of magical creatures. hagrid and snape are out doing something... perhaps fleur could teach potions? i mean, she was the school champion for her school... she must be good at something, right? the whole school cant be a bunch of unknowledgable people...
my quesiton is, where do wizard kids go to school before hogwarts? like take Ron for example. do they go to muggle schools or wizard ones? if they don't go to school, how do they kno anything, espcecially the basics?
i definitely don't think harry could be related to voldemort. otherwise, *harry* would be the last remaining ancestor of salazar slytherin and not voldemort. and again, jkr said herself that that was too star wars. its likely that voldemort wanted to kill the line of gryffindor... yeah, mentioned many times by other ppl... "They live in Godric's Hallow! Harry pulled out the sword of Gryffindor because he is a "true" gryffindor!"
im not too sure about how wizards and witches get chosen. i think if ur parents were wizard/witches, u have like a 99% chance of being one too (meaning out of 100 ppl, 99 will have magic in em)... and perhaps vice versa for muggles (99% muggle)? i think its kinda random who that 1% will be.

yeah i always wondered where they went to school b4 hogwarts, coz jkr always makes out that the wizards know nothing muggle related in which case they can't have gone to muggle school. so there must be wizard primary schools, unless they're home-taught i was reading a fanfic the other day and in the fic, the sorting hat had said to draco he would be good in gryfindor but he asked it to put him in slytherin, basically the opposite of harry, i'd kinda like jrk to include something like that in future books! think jkr needs to clear up how you become a witch/wizard!! so there's gonna be 3 new professors? i never knew that! what about lupin comming back to be a professor?

I thought it was just 1 new professor. Anyone know where Snape and Hagrid will be? Wait, there would be another teacher for COMC if Hagrid supposedly died.. which almost everyone agrees [ am I right? ] is going to happen. But that wouldn't be like in the beginning or middle of the book thing right? I think JKR would put the whole death thing in a dramatic scene at the end of the book like she did with Cedric. Who knows?
So that leaves Snape. He CAN'T go. I mean I'm not a Snape fan or anything but he is too big of a character. He has to stayyy.
I can't imagine Fleur teaching anything what-so-ever. Can you? Disaster right there.
Lupin I know, is supposed to come back in the next book. I think he's one of the 'old gang'?? Yeah.. of course he would be. But I don't think he's going to teach anything.. Too much of a danger now that everyone knows he's a werewolf. Blah.. things to figure out..

snape is supposed to spy for dumbledore (he's going to pretend to be a deatheater agian)...that's why he isn't going to be in hogwarts for the fifth year...
as for fleur, i've heard many rumours that she's going to be teaching at hogwarts, but judging from her attitude in GoF...she hates the place...and she's only 18, i mean she has to be a total genius like hermione to be a teacher that young right?
and i like the whole Draco begged to be in slytherin thing, that would explain a whole lot. How he can't measure up to his father's expectations, blah blah blah..fill in the details...

<g> Am I the only one who recalls Fleur saying near/at the end of GOF that she wanted to teach? <g> That doesn't mean it's going to be *her*, tho.

i don't remember her saying she wanted to teach but i haven't read the book for a while so i can't be sure! i really can't imagine her as a teacher! hogwarts won't be the same wthout snape! i think draco is trying to be ther person his father wants him to be rather than the person he actually is and his father will abuse him or something if he doesn't become a death eater, something along those lines anyway! that's what i like to think! and just a useless thing, i bought a slytherin scarf yesterday, even tho my mum's making me 1, but the 1 i bought has a slytherin logo on

I'm kind of late, but who cares ;D You know how the big macho important wizards get dubbed "Order of Merlin"? I've read on many sites {and must say that I believe it myself} that Dumbledore's "old crew" {including Arabella Figg, Harry's 'babysitter'} is The Order of the Phoenix. Somebody mentioned Harry predicting himself getting decapitated. Okay, WOW that really opened up my eyes. Good job Ron's not dying in the 5th book, he's dying in the 6th I'm currently going through my ratty old copy of PoA with post-it notes and a pen, labelling everything. I suggest you guys try it, it's really helpful AAAARRRRIIIIII!!! <- hahaha

Jasmine... where did you get THAT re Ron getting killed in the 6th book? In a speculation site (like how this board sometimes tend to turn out, hehe)? Makes me wonder why Rowling had to write "sorry". She might be 'sorry' she has to kill one of 'Harry's fan', but the 'sorry' really sounded or seemed tearful

fleur just says she wants to come back and get a job to improve her english... she doesn't actually say hogwarts, so she could simply mean back to england.
just hoping on my part, i found her character really obnoxious, and i don't think we need any more beautiful, snotty, but adored characters in literature. how about some more butt-ugly ones who are admired and respected for their abilities? i like those better.

I got the ron dying in 6th book thing from my crazy friend Louise. There was a message board up a while ago called The Hogwarts Express where they discussed their elite little hp minds out of control, haha. Lou refused to tell me exactly where they found out such info, and what else she knows but in a weird unexplainable way, I believe her. It makes sense that Ron will die. One of the threesome has to die {except for harry, if he dies itll be at the very end of course} and ron is generally the third wheel. Hermione is the brains, Harry is the brawn, Ron is the... boy support for Harry. He'll die. ORRR, hey.. we could all bombard Lou and get her to reveal her secrets to us, haha. {i bet she'll find this through her referral stats and come here... HI LOUISE!}
